CHAPTER 5

JANE’S VISIT

After speaking with Jane, Mr. Bennet took pen to paper and responded to his brother’s letter and had it sent right away. He now pushed away his papers on his desk and sighed. He was certain that Lizzy would talk sense to her sister about waiting to find a man of equal good sense who she could love and respect and marry. From their private talks over the years he already knew these were Lizzy’s feelings and he reasoned that she could help Jane.

Mrs. Bennet was pleased to hear that Jane was going to visit with the Gardiners and it was only Mr. Bennet’s asking if she was at all concerned with Lizzy that the woman responded. She told him of course she was interested in Lizzy’s condition but it was likely a trifling matter and was not as important as Jane’s job to find a rich man to marry to save the family.

Mr. Bennet now threw up his hands and stormed out of the room before telling the others that if they have a bad future they can blame it on their mother because she really does not have their best interest at heart. Though Mrs. Bennet attempted to enter her husband’s library, he told her to get away and leave him some peace and quiet for a change.

Such was the scene at Longbourn those days before Jane left for town.

Back at Darcy House, Georgiana prepared to visit Elizabeth and help with the children. This was something that they had planned days earlier and now Elizabeth was eager to see her friend again. She had hoped that Mr. Darcy would visit with his sister but Georgiana was taken to the Gardiners by one of the servants who would return for her later.

Elizabeth tried not to show her disappointment in not seeing Mr. Darcy but seeing Georgiana again assuaged her concerns. She could not tell any difference in her young friend’s countenance and Georgiana soon told her that Darcy was now very busy with estate work and meetings with people in town and was looking forward to the dinner planned for Saturday.

Both Elizabeth and her relatives enjoyed Georgiana’s company that day, though Mr. Gardiner had been at work and had not seen her. After the children took their afternoon nap, Elizabeth and Georgiana used their time to plan things that they might do with Jane and both wondered how Jane and Mr. Bingley would get along.

While Georgiana was visiting with Elizabeth, Darcy payed a visit to his friend. Fate smiled at him because Charles Bingley had just returned the day before from visiting his family in Liverpool.

When the butler came into his study with Mr. Darcy, Charles jumped to greet the man.

“This is a pleasant surprise, Darcy. I did not know if you were in town or at Pemberley, but I have just returned yesterday from Liverpool.”

“Yes, I remember you saying that you had family there. Were you gone long?”

“No, my friend, I was only there for five days and frankly that was long enough.
